Welcome 2013!

smallpentLumos, Blessed Be.

Another year, gone. Is it really going to be 2013 in just a few days? I can remember when I was a kid and used to wonder what life would be like now. Would we have flying cars? Moving sidewalks? Would we be living on other planets? While these things never came to pass, there are other things that do exist in our modern age that I would have thought unbelievable when I was a child. We have phones that let you see the person you’re talking to. We can start our cars without being in them. We can play games that recognize our faces and interact with us. We can safely assume we are now living in the “future“, even though the future may not be exactly how we imagined it. Being in my late 40’s, I can remember when we didn’t have cellphones and computers. Children and young adults today have no idea what it’s like not to have these things. I know 4-year olds who have their own iPads and smartphones. While all of this new technology has made things a lot simpler, it has also created a generation of people who have no reason to leave their homes and go outside. Why actually go and visit someone when you can just log on to the computer and “chat” with them via webcam? Boardgames are becoming obsolete. Video games are the thing now, and “gamers” don’t have to be in the same room, (or even the same country) to play together. Granted, I own an Xbox 360-Kinect but I must admit I don’t play it that often.

Many people are becoming mesmerized with technology and are losing touch with Nature. There are times when I find myself being drawn in. I have spent far too much time on Facebook when there were more important things I should be doing. In 2013, I want to limit my internet usage down to at least 4 days a week. Any more than that is a waste of time, for me at least. Beginning January 1st, 2013, my computer will remain off on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. I can’t tell you how many mornings I’ve wasted sitting at the computer. Before I knew it, 2 hours had sped by and I had accomplished nothing.

I have determined that 2013 will be a year of priorities, and will be even more magickal than 2012. I will continue to write this blog on a regular basis. I’ve decided to write more about some things…and less about others.

Our holidays were both quiet and magickal. We celebrated Yule with the local community we belong to, and I was recently initiated as their High Priest. I will serve in this capacity for the next two years, and will do my very best. This community was born out of adversity, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, most of us having endured the same experiences. It is a shining light in the darkness, this Moonlit Grove. The very name is a testament that even in the darkest night, the Light of the Goddess and God in all of their manifestations shines all the more brighter. Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we visited Matt’s relatives, for some food and socializing. Matt and I exchanged gifts, and he gave me the elemental pentacle I have been coveting for so long. It has the elemental colors at their assigned locations (according to traditional witchcraft) around the points of the 5-pointed star. In a magickal context, the colors alone have many layers of meaning.

My new pentacle, a gift from my partner Matt.
My new elemental pentacle.

In 2013 I want to dive even deeper into the mists of celtic lore and magick, and incorporate even more Old Ways teachings into my personal practice. What are the “Old Ways”? These are magickal practices passed down to us from witches and other practitioners who existed long before traditional wicca, and are gleaned from arcane lore, medieval and old world texts and other ancient sources. I have been very inspired by the works of Raven Grimassi, a witch and historian, to include Old Ways practices along with my modern magickal activities.

In the Spring I will return to public teaching, and am planning a class for April, entitled The Nature of Magick. I will post more details as the time approaches. I would also like to do the Spring Spiritual Holistic Expo again this year…we shall see.

I will end this post by saying that in the coming year, most of my articles will focus on teaching and magickal education, with a few personal anecdotes thrown in. I do enjoy writing about my walk along the path of magickal spirituality, sharing what works for me and what doesn’t, and offering suggestions along the way.

2013 will be the most magickal year yet!
