The Witch’s Library

For the Witch, study is a life-long endeavor. We strive to learn more about the intricacies of magick and spells. We do our best to time our spells properly by studying the phases of the Moon and the movement of the planets. We yearn to be knowledgeable about the lore and many uses of magickal herbs and plants. On a regular basis we practice various forms of divination, from Tarot to Runes to Crystal Gazing. All of these things are important and necessary for our growth and skill development, and I can attest that my own magickal library is overflowing. However, there are other subjects that we would do well to learn about also. These subjects may not be specifically about magick, but in many ways they play a role in our magickal lives. So, as soon as you finish reading that book on Ceremonial Magick or the 20 Ways To Use Dragon‘s Blood, pick up something related to one of these topics.

World Religions: Familiarize yourself with several of the world’s religions, how they originated, what different faiths believe and why. What do Christians believe? Mormons? Buddhists? The more you learn about different faiths, the more you can interact with followers of those faiths from a place of wisdom and knowledge. Pick up a Bible. I believe that we as Witches should be able to quote the Bible just as well as any Christian, especially since so many scriptures are used against us out of context.

Mythology: Learn about the ancient Gods and Goddesses from countries around the world. What can you learn about your ancestors from the old stories? If you are drawn to a particular pantheon, do a study of it’s history and lore. In the process, you may discover many things about yourself.

History: Gain some knowledge about the history of various cultures. England has a very rich history, as do Ireland, Italy and Egypt. If you don’t feel like reading some huge book of mythology, then go to the library and rent a documentary on DVD. Order a few videos about the Egyptian pyramids or Stonehenge. What about the history of Wicca/Witchcraft?

Psychology: We encounter many kinds of people, who have all sorts of problems and personal issues. Learning how the mind works and what motivates people can be of great benefit in your life as a Witch.

Science: Modern science has been “discovering” things that Witches have already known for centuries. Learn a few things about Quantum Theory, and how our thoughts and feelings affect the worlds around us, both seen and unseen.

Alternative Healing: Familiarize yourself with the many forms of alternative healing therapies, such as Reiki, Crystal Therapy, Aromatherapy, Sound Healing and others. Think about learning one or more of these skills.

Astronomy: Get a basic working knowledge of our Solar System, and how the planets move through the sky. Can you find Orion’s Belt? What about the star called Sirius? Where did these names come from and why were they named these things? A fascinating study. Astronomy and Astrology often work together, especially if you do work with birth charts.

Nature: Learn all you can about nature, the earth and the environment. Learn about various animals and how they live and communicate (particularly those animals you consider to be a totem or spirit animal guide). Immerse yourself in a study of the elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Not just from a magickal standpoint but academically as well.

By all means your magickal studies should continue without fail. But every now and then, put the spell books aside and learn about the afore-mentioned subjects as well, as they will help you to become a more mature, well-balanced and wise Witch!
